Evolving - The Family Room Before & .....

Have you ever had one of those rooms (or all of those rooms) that just evolves? You don't really know what it's going to turn into until it has turned.

That would be our family room.

This is the room when we first saw the house. (previous owners)

Not too ugly, but not me at all.

These pictures make it look like a dark and rather dreary room, when really it's just the opposite.

I had no idea what I was going to do in this room, and I'm still not sure. So I'm letting it figure it out on its own.

Let us see what it's come up with so far...

Someday I think it will sprout some kind of something on the walls...

A different color. Perhaps white? Some faux planks? Board and batten?

It hasn't decided yet, so I'm just going to sit back and let it simmer for a while.

It asked for wood floor but we had to refuse. We have an inground pool and two little boys that want to bring the pool inside. So, tile it will remain.

It stays messy with toys most of the time, and it seems ok with that. Which is good. I don't see that changing for a while.

Someday the window will get replaced with a bigger one. Some faaar off day.

This room has asked to be done on a very small budget. About $25 dollars or so.

Mainly it has collected the other rooms cast offs. It's ok with that. I asked.

It changes its accessories more often than we can keep up with.

Like I said, it's evolving.

Who knows where it will go next...

We Can Do It Cheaper - Guest Post

The Virginia House

I was so excited to get an email the other day from a friend with her great We Can Do It Cheaper project.

Here is what she sent me...
I have been looking for a yellow pot for a plant for the master bedroom. I could not find the right color of yellow, so I decided to paint a terra cotta pot with the color I wanted. My dear hubby LOVES to buy mistint paint at Lowe's, he's just sure we can use it somewhere, eventually. This time he was so right! He had the perfect color. Below are the before and after shots.
Hope you like what I did!! Oh, I saw some pots similar to this at Plow and Hearth, but they were the wrong color, and for one the size of the largest, cost about $25. For all three of these pots, I have about $3.

This is what the pots looked like before. I washed them good, and sanded any rough parts.

I used water based latex paint for the base coats (yellow). The bird silhouette was from something I found online and blew up. I used acrylic paint for that as well as the stripe on the last pot. I still need to add some polyurethane to the large pot to make it water proof. For the inside you need oil based polyurethane, it lasts a lot longer, and goes on thicker. For the outside, you need water based polyurethane, which won't change the color of your paint. Oil based tends to have a yellowish tone to it that can change colors. This was a fun project, and now I am ready to move on to another "Cheaper" project! Thanks for inspiring me to get my creative side in gear and see what I could do to decorate my house inexpensively, or with things I already have!

Thank you Melissa for sending it to me and I hope all of you enjoy it!

Chalkboard Love'n Part 1

Chalkboards, chalk walls, chalk hands, chalk cabinets, chalk floors, chalk doors....
the list goes on and on....

So in tribute to the joy that chalkboard paint is bringing to us all, I thought I would share some of my own chalk inspired ideas as well as other ones I have had the pleasure if viewing.

Come along with me.....

Pottery Barn
Love this idea and have tried to think of where I could do it in my own house...
Pottery Barn eclectic entry
I did see a great idea on another blog (can't remember where) on how to do both the above ideas. Buy some standard canvas's from your local HOBBY LOBBY or other craft store and get out your chalkboard paint. In no time and hardly any money, you can have the above looks!

I love this idea for a faux fireplace. Great way to fill the blank spot.

master bathroom eclectic bathroom
Such a great and fun thing to have in the bathroom. Multi tasking on a whole new level!

Some of my own chalkboard signs for a quick and easy decor idea.

I'm not sure if you can get too much cheaper than these fun signs. I spent about 50 cents on each. (had the wood on hand already)

Tune in next week for another look at chalk painting. I have more of my own and even better ones from others. Leave me a comment if you've done something with chalk paint that you would like to share. Or email it to me, I would love to post some of the great stuff that YOU are doing!

We Can Do It Cheaper - You, You, You

The Virginia House

I had to choose between some really good ones this week, but JoLynn over at Wood'n Things got my final vote.

She took this rather unattractive rooster picture from the goodwill and added some paint.

Look at the great new look!

I plan on doing a post about chalkboards sometime soon. I have to confess that I have somewhat of a phobia about them, I can't even let my my mind wander to the whole fingernail thing..... yuck, can't type it all out. Or the feel of chalk on your hands. Gives me chill bumps and not in a good way.

So, anyway I love what she did and that it only cost her a few dollars! Be sure to look at the little baby onesies she added transfers too as well. So Cute!

Your turn. Wow me! (we did make it to 10 last week, but one of them was accidentally linked back to me. Try again please!!!)
