I pinned this image a year ago. I think I pinned it because of the pom-poms above the crib, but later I discovered the book box under the window. I mean, what a great idea! I immediately decided to make something similar and one year later...

...I did.

Not gonna lie, I'm kind of obsessed. I know it took me a year to get around to it, but the funny part is that it was easy to make (isn't that always the way?). All the details after the jump...

First, measure your window and decide how big you want your book box to be. I picked up a few pieces of pine shelving at Home Depot and Adam cut them to size for me using our table saw (of course you could also have the folks at Home Depot cut them for you). I wanted the view from the front to be of a solid piece of wood, so I planned the layout and measurements accordingly. It's kind of tricky to explain in words, so here are a couple of pictures - the first one shows all my pieces laid out and the second one is basically what happens when you "fold" them into place.

The important thing is that a) the front is one solid piece of wood and b) the sides extend slightly beyond the back of the box. This is because I attached the box to the wall using a cleat. The longer sides will make it look like the box is flush against the wall.

To assemble my box, I ran a bead of wood glue along each seam and used finishing nails to hold it all together. When nailing my boards together, I used a carpenter's square to keep everything, well, square. I used a nail punch to set each nail, then filled the holes with wood filler and sanded everything smooth.

To match the rest of the dark wood tones in the room, I applied one coat of stain (Minwax's Jacobean) and sealed it with a coat of satin poly.

To attach the box to the wall, I made a cleat from a scrap piece of wood. The cleat is secured to the wall with screws (make sure to screw into studs) and the box is secured to the cleat.

Since a wooden box + books = heavy, this approach ensures that it's nice and sturdy. The last step is to fill the box with books and enjoy!

I love walking into the nursery and seeing the new book box. The room feels much less cluttered now (before the box, the books were just piled on the floor) and the best part is that we were able to make use of previously wasted space (which is a pretty big deal in such a small room).

I actually wanted to write this post on Monday but have struggled with my health this week and finally have the time and feel as if the fog has lifted a bit for us. 

On Monday, I had to check my attitude. I remember almost dreading this week and the horribly full schedule we had in store. And then, I remembered that I hadn't consulted with God about my day or my week as He began to gently remind me, as He so lovingly does, that He is the BEGINNING and the END. I quickly related that soft reminder to the fact that not only is God the BEGINNING and the END of everything, but the beginning and the end of my week. 

What a revelation for me (and hopefully some of you) to rest in that. To know that God is just as much in my Mondays as He is my Fridays. That He is the beginning of my week as well as the end. So whether it's Monday or Friday, I will choose joy and be thankful for each and everyday and also choose not to follow the cultural standard of the "dreaded Monday". 

So, thank God it's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And thank God I can rest each of those days knowing He's all up in my business working things out for me, going to bat for me, cheering for me and loving me.

It's time for another Pinterest Challenge, which means I've completed another project I probably wouldn't have otherwise (you can check out my past Pinterest projects here and here). I was inspired by these DIY coasters from Penelope & Pip, but I decided to add my own twist with a monogram (I grabbed a stamp at Michael's for $1.50). Unfortunately, I couldn't find any pre-cut coasters, so I made my own out of cork tiles. Another option would be to paint over some coasters you already own.

Here's the how-to:

1. Gather your supplies.
2. Trace the shape of your coaster onto your cork. I used a coaster I already had on hand.
3. Cut out your coasters using an exacto knife, then smooth out the edges with some fine grit sandpaper.
4. Tape off your coasters and brush on your first paint colour. Apply as many coats as needed (I did three for the pink and two for the gold), but remember to remove the tape while your paint is still wet. Once your first colour is dry, tape off the coaster to apply your second colour. The last step is to apply your stamp and seal your coasters with a clear glaze.

And now you can enjoy your pretty, personalized coasters with a glass of wine :)

When I heard about the Summer Pinterest Challenge, I knew it was the kick in the butt I needed to check another nursery project off my list. But let's get straight to the reveal, shall we?

Last week, the closet looked like this:

Fully functional, but in need of a little sumthin', sumthin'. I pinned this tutorial for chevron potato stamp art ages ago, thinking it would be a cute art project for the nursery.

But while looking through all the amazing stenciled closet ideas on Pinterest, I decided to skip the frame and go straight for the wall instead. Since most of the closet is hidden from view I'm lazy, I focused on the area behind my shelving.

I drew a parallelogram on my potatoes and cut out three stencils - one for each colour.

Using a ruler and pencil, I drew several very faint guidelines on my wall (my rows still got a little wonky in places, so next time I'd probably skip the guidelines and just slow down). I used some craft paints I already had on hand and blotted my potato stamp on some paper towel before pressing it to the wall to keep things from getting too goopy. Early on, I realized the colours I'd chosen would fade into the background once the shelves were full of clothes, so I decided to stick with just one colour - silver.

As you can see, my stenciling is far from perfect, but I like it that way. To me, that's kind of the deal with potato stamps and I embraced drips, gaps and wonky rows.

The shelves will eventually be filled with more clothing and probably a few baskets or boxes so I don't have to worry about neatly folding everything - I just threw a few things on there for photos :)

I was pretty excited when I heard about the Pinterest Challenge, mostly because it was a good kick in the butt to finish this DIY bunting flags art I've been thinking about. It's a combination of two pins on my inspiration boards:

Emily's cute above-the-bed art.

So over the weekend I grabbed some supplies - including Lindsay's bunting flags template - and sketched a couple of 'strings' across my dollar store canvases with a Sharpie. After cutting out the flags, I used Modge Podge to attach them to the canvases (I applied two thin coats over the entire surface of the canvases). Once the canvases were dry, I used upholstery tacks to attach the twine to the frames and hung them on some rustic-looking nails in our guest bedroom.

I love the colours they add to the room and I think they'd look so cute in a nursery (which we hope this room will be someday). Not bad for a $10 art project and a huge thanks to Lindsay for sharing her inspiring work!
